Alvar Aalto was a designer across many mediums. Mainly an architect, his career can be traced by the styles he employed, from Nordic Classicism to rational International Style modernism. Aalto was devoted to the idea of Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art, and was often responsible for not only the architecture of a building but its interior finishes as well. He is also known as the inventor of bent plywood furniture.
